What do we lose when the old stories disappear, and what do we gain when they are told again?

We’re thrilled to announce the premiere of Moonfish's latest production, Why the Moon Travels, a magical retelling of Irish Traveller folktales, created in collaboration with award-winning writer Oein DeBhairduin. After more than two years of development, we’re excited to share this show, devised by an all-Traveller cast, as part of the Galway International Arts Festival, running from July 14th to 19th, 2025.

Why the Moon Travels invites you into a world where the stories of kind animals, mysterious beings, and wayward humans come to life through the lens of Irish Traveller heritage. DeBhairduin’s best-selling book serves as the foundation for this hauntingly beautiful performance, blending the wisdom of folklore with the performers' own lived experiences. Using oral storytelling, song, and evocative shadow puppetry, the show celebrates the nomadic traditions of Irish Travellers while addressing how their culture has been overlooked in modern Ireland.

This production highlights the power of storytelling in preserving ancient traditions and bringing them into the present, asking us: What do we lose when the old stories disappear, and what do we gain when they are told again?

Performances will be held at the Bank of Ireland Theatre, University of Galway, from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th July, with both evening and matinee performances available. Tickets are on sale now through the Galway International Arts Festival website.

Why the Moon Travels is an unmissable opportunity to experience the unique and vibrant culture of Irish Travellers, brought to life through the magic of theatre. Stories of a people, through the people and by the people.
