What do we lose when the old stories disappear, and what do we gain when they are told again?
Why The Moon Travels
A haunting and magical new production from Moonfish Theatre, Why the Moon Travels is a retelling of Irish Traveller folktales devised by an all-Traveller cast, based on the best-selling book by writer and activist Oein DeBhairduin.
Modern Ireland meets an older Éire as this richly imaginative show interweaves tales of kind animals, otherworldly beings, and hapless humans with memories and moments from the performers’ own lives. Using oral storytelling, song, and evocative shadow puppetry, Why the Moon Travels celebrates the beauty of Irish Travellers’ nomadic heritage and gently explores how that heritage has been misrepresented and suppressed in the modern Irish state.
Why the Moon Travels is a celebration of culture, memory, and imagination, brought to life with Moonfish’s signature theatrical magic.
Part of Galway International Arts Festival 2025, this world premiere will run at the Bank of Ireland Theatre from July 14th to 19th.
Presented by Moonfish Theatre, Oein DeBhairduin and Galway International Arts Festival.
Supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Galway City Council.
